What are Structural Beams?

Structural beams carry the loads that walls once supported, making it possible to remove walls, open up floor plans, or reinforce an existing structure. Using engineered steel or LVL beams, we redistribute weight safely so your home stays sound while you create the open, modern layout you want.

Every beam installation is engineered and permitted, with temporary supports in place before the new beam is set and permanently secured.

Our Process

A Precise, Engineered Approach

Consultation & Assessment

We evaluate the wall or area in question to determine load paths and what’s required to safely modify or remove it. This assessment lets us recommend the right beam type and provide a clear scope before any work begins.

Engineering & Permits

Our engineers prepare the structural drawings and load calculations, and we coordinate the permits structural modifications typically require. Proper engineering at this stage is what keeps your home safe and your project compliant.

Temporary Support

Before anything is removed, we install temporary supports to safely carry the existing load. This protects your home’s structure and ensures the work proceeds without any movement or settlement.

Beam Installation

The load-bearing wall is removed and the engineered steel or LVL beam is set and permanently secured. The load is transferred to the new beam exactly as the engineering specifies.

Finishing & Inspection

We complete the surrounding finishes and arrange the required inspections to confirm the work meets code. You’re left with the open, modern space you wanted — without compromising structural integrity.

Our older, lower (6′), mostly finished basement needed to be expanded to allow for an elderly family member to join our household. Rock Bottom came recommended by a friend of a friend and did not disappoint. The price was competitive (but not cheap) for gutting the basement, taking our floor down to get us a finished height of 8′ with new drains, sump pump, backwater valve and hot water heating pipes with manifold. The team was always punctual (6 days a week), always cheerful, and highly effective. From start to finish their work took 5 weeks (the estimate was 4-6). Our GC noted how rare that is with underpinning work, and a builder friend noted the quality of the floor’s finished surface. Additionally, our semi-detached neighbour’s basement is almost finished (the team is still punctual, cheerful and effective).
